With roughly 45 songs written for her new album, jazz-pop singer and songwriter Ellen Doty shouldn’t have any trouble selecting songs for her upcoming Shell Theatre performance.
The Calgary-based performer has a show at Fort Saskatchewan’s Shell Theatre on Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m. She’ll be performing backed with a full band, including a pianist, drummer, bass player, guitarist and award-winning saxophonist Eli Bennett.
Calgary artist Ellen Doty’s jazz roots have been an important part of her musical style since her first performance at the age of five. Now, with a debut album and a 46-stop Canadian tour under her belt, Doty will be bringing her unique style to Redwood House on April 9 as part of the Bragg Creek Performing Arts series.

"My philosophy is that good music is good music no matter the genre,” says Calgary-based singer-songwriter Ellen Doty. It’s an appropriate mantra for a vocalist raised on everything from Ella Fitzgerald to Lauryn Hill and whose jazz-rooted music has enchanted listeners with its soulful nuances of folk and pop.

Ellen Doty traded her textbooks for a career in jazz music.
It was a decision her parents weren’t too happy about but, it seems, things have been paying off for the local jazz singer-songwriter.
On Feb. 19, Doty is set to open for Grammy winner Gregory Porter at the Jack Singer.
Turns out she’s also extremely excited to open for Porter — there’s no such thing as stage fright anymore, she said.
